Senior Republican, eyeing Trump budget, worries about U.S. debt

March 13, 2019

By Susan Cornwell

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A senior Senate Republican gave a lukewarm welcome to U.S. President Donald Trump’s 2020 budget plan, complaining on Wednesday that growing debt was taking the country in “an ominous direction.”

Senate Budget Committee Chairman Mike Enzi opened a hearing on the Republican president’s proposal with a broad attack on what he said was the growing, misguided view that U.S. debt and deficits do not matter.

“We’re in a credit-card Congress,” Enzi said, noting the United States would soon face annual government deficits of over $1 trillion. “We are clearly headed in an ominous direction.”

Trump’s plan is highly unlikely to become law in the face of opposition from Democrats, who control the House of Representatives.

Democrats at the hearing focused on Trump’s proposed cuts to social programs, making clear they would continue to emphasize them in the 2020 presidential election campaign.

The budget proposal “practices the Robin Hood principle in reverse,” said Senator Bernie Sanders, budget panel member and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate. “It takes from the poor and working families and gives to the very wealthy.”

In his $4.7 trillion budget unveiled on Monday, Trump called for overhauling social programs that help poor and elderly Americans, while boosting military spending and funding a U.S.-Mexico border wall.

The Trump administration has said the plan represents an attempt to be fiscally responsible at a time of trillion-dollar budget deficits.

Tax cuts were a priority for the Trump White House and congressional Republicans in recent years, rather than deficit reduction. The U.S. deficit is expected to run to $900 billion in 2019 and the national debt has ballooned to $22 trillion.

Enzi blamed both Republicans and Democrats for the trend toward trillion-dollar deficits. The Republican lawmaker cited a report from the Congressional Budget Office that the public debt is expected to reach 78 percent of gross domestic product this year.

Russell Vought, acting White House budget director, defended Trump’s plan, saying the president was requesting more spending cuts than any previous administration.

House Democrats are working on their own budget proposal that would be a blueprint for setting spending levels.

The party is divided over costly ideas like a “Medicare for All” universal healthcare proposal and the “Green New Deal” to eliminate U.S. greenhouse gas emissions within a decade.

Elon Musk Launches Free Internet to the Whole World

Elon Musk launches free internet worldwide

Elon Musk is planning to launch a series of satellites into space that will provide a free internet service for citizens around the world.

The Starlink Project will see 4,425 broadband-internet satellites orbit 700 miles above the Earth’s surface.

Disclose.tv reports: He also plans on sending 7,500 spacecraft into lower orbit. In total, this is almost 12,000 satellites, which is double the amount of satellites that have been launched in history.

SpaceX did not give much away about their plans since they unveiled them in 2015. Despite this public documents have been revealed on a regular basis quietly due to the fact that Musk needs the Federal Communications Commission approval. The FCC documents were made public, and in November SpaceX was given permission for the launch of Microsat-2a and Microsat-2b, two experimental spacecraft so that the company could test out their space-based internet.

Mission Was Postponed a Day Due To Wind-shear

The mission is setting off from the Vandenberg Air Force Base at 9: 17 am ET on the Falcon 9 rocket, and this is a day later than what had been originally planned. On Wednesday SpaceX was concerned about the weather due to the high winds that would have messed around with the steering of the rocket, so it was postponed until Thursday. Musk said in a Tweet that the high altitude wind-shear had exceeded the 2% load. He said that this was only a small amount but that it was better to be safe and the launch would be postponed.

SpaceX is in part using a reusable first stage rocket booster that they had used in August and recovered. However, SpaceX did say that they were not going to try to recover Falcon 9s first stage following the launch. The Paz satellite should be deployed around 11 minutes following the launch, but there was nothing said about the time frame of the smaller satellites.

There is going to be a live video feed that starts 15 minutes before the launch is due, which should begin about 9 am ET on Thursday.

FedEx Unveils Delivery Bot, Aimed At Last-Mile Efficiencies, Gig-Economy Delivery Jobs Feared

FedEx Corp. unveiled an autonomous delivery robot designed to assist retailers with last-mile deliveries to customers, which debuted on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Feb. 26.

The next day, the Memphis, Tenn.-based shipping company issued a press release that stated: “FedEx SameDay Bot ” will have the capabilities to aid retailers in accepting orders from customers and deliver directly to their homes or businesses.

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>

FedEx is collaborating with retailers such as AutoZone, Lowe’s, Target, Walgreens and Walmart, in the development of autonomous delivery.

“The FedEx SameDay Bot is an innovation designed to change the face of local delivery and help retailers efficiently address their customers’ rising expectations,” said Brie Carere, executive vice president and chief marketing and communications officer for FedEx.

“The bot represents a milestone in our ongoing mission to solve the complexities and expense of same-day, last-mile delivery for the growing e-commerce market in a manner that is safe and environmentally friendly.”

FedEx SameDay Bot can travel on sidewalks and along roadsides, delivering small packages to customers’ homes and businesses. Bot features include pedestrian-safe technologies, including LiDAR and multiple sensors, battery power for zero emissions, and machine-learning algorithms to detect and avoid objects.

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>

FedEx is preparing a pilot test this summer in select markets, including Memphis, Tenn., pending final approval from local officials.

“We couldn’t be more excited that FedEx chose its hometown as one of the pilot cities for this revolutionary innovation,” Mayor Jim Strickland, City of Memphis, said.

“We look forward to working with FedEx to continue introducing technologies that will help improve the quality of life in our community.”

The test will include deliveries between selected FedEx Office locations.

FedEx said 60% of merchants’ customers live within a three-mile circumference of most stores. The upcoming test will run through the end of the year to see if autonomous delivery at the last mile is a viable solution for cheap deliveries.

<!–[if IE 9]><![endif]–>

Unlocking new technology that eliminates costs from the last mile is any delivery company and retailers’ dream heading into 2020. Restaurants pay third-party delivery companies like Uber Eats, DoorDash and GrubHub commissions of 10-30% per order.

So if FedEx succeeds in its upcoming test and offers a nationwide rollout, let’s say sometime in the early 2020s, then thousands of broke Americans who are working last-mile gig-economy jobs could find themselves displaced by robots.

U.S. Federal Reserve mulls tighter rules on foreign bank branches: sources

March 5, 2019

By Michelle Price and Pete Schroeder

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Federal Reserve is considering imposing stricter rules on foreign bank branches to tighten what critics say is a loophole that has allowed overseas lenders to shield assets from the toughest U.S. bank rules, three people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

The changes being discussed could be a blow for lenders such as Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse Group AG and UBS Group AG and which have for years held billions of dollars in assets, such as corporate loans, at their New York branches.

The possible rule changes, that have not yet been decided, could also inflame tensions with European regulators who have long-complained that their lenders are held to higher standards in the United States than domestic rivals.

The changes are being considered as part of a broader package tweaking rules for overseas lenders due to be unveiled by the Fed in coming weeks, the people said. Any proposed changes would be subject to industry comment and feedback.

China says defense spending rise to be ‘reasonable and appropriate’

March 4, 2019

BEIJING (Reuters) – China will keep up a “reasonable and appropriate” increase in defense spending to satisfy its national security and military reforms, a government spokesman said on Monday, ahead of the release of its defense budget.

China’s spending on armed forces is closely watched in Asia and Washington for pointers to its broader strategic intentions amid an impressive modernization program that has developed stealth fighters, aircraft carriers and anti-satellite missiles.

In 2018, China unveiled its largest defense spending increase in three years, setting an 8.1 percent growth target for the year.

He was speaking ahead of parliament’s release of the national budget on Tuesday, the legislature’s spokesman Zhang Yesui, a former ambassador to Washington, said China had always walked the path of peaceful development.

“Maintaining reasonable and appropriate growth in national defense spending is needed for protecting national security and for military reforms with Chinese characteristics,” Zhang said.

China’s “limited” defense spending is only for its own security needs and to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and will not threaten other countries, he added.

“Whether a country poses a military threat to other countries depends on its foreign and defense policies, rather than how much its defense spending increases.”

Zhang did not elaborate on how much defense spending would rise, as has often been the custom in recent years the day before the legislature opens.

U.S. President Donald Trump has backed plans to request $750 billion from Congress for defense spending in 2019. That compares with the 1.11 trillion yuan ($165.55 billion) China set for its military budget in 2018.

Zhang said China only spent about 1.3 percent of GDP on its military last year, compared with more than 2 percent for “certain major developed countries”.

China gives no breakdown of its defense budget, prompting complaints from neighbors and other military powers that Beijing’s lack of transparency has fueled regional tension. China says it is fully transparent and no threat.

Diplomats and many foreign experts say China’s defense numbers probably underestimate true military spending for the People’s Liberation Army, the world’s largest armed forces, which also run the space program.

The 2019 figure should be unveiled at Tuesday’s opening of the annual session of China’s largely rubber-stamp parliament, although, in 2017, it was not initially announced, prompting renewed concerns about transparency.

China’s Xiaomi unveils 5G smartphone for $680

February 24, 2019

BARCELONA (Reuters) – China’s Xiaomi, the world’s fourth-largest smartphone maker, unveiled a smartphone on Sunday that will be able to take advantage of new and faster 5G mobile networks and cost far less than one announced by market leader Samsung last week.

Prices for Xiaomi’s new offering will start at 599 euros ($679.33) when it hits the market in May, Donovan Sung, Xiaomi’s global head of products, told a trade event in Barcelona, prompting gasps in the hall where it was presented.

Samsung, which leads the market ahead of Huawei and Apple, launched a 5G phone on Wednesday which it said would be available in early summer, with a $1,980 starting price.

“We think this is one of the most competitive prices for a 5G smartphone today and it’s going to be available very, very soon,” Sung said.

Xiaomi initially targeted Asian markets, notably India, for overseas expansion, before launching in Spain, France and Italy in late 2017.

Kalashnikov Unveils Kamikaze Drone At IDEX-2019

Russian assault and sniper rifle manufacturer Kalashnikov Group, a Rostec subsidiary, has unveiled a new high-precision suicide drone, called the KYB UAV, on Sunday at the IDEX-2019 arms exhibition in the United Arab Emirates.

The new drone is equipped with GPS, allows it to precisely hits ground targets, delivering a small warhead to target coordinates.

“This is a very accurate and most effective weapon, which is very difficult to fight with using traditional air defense systems, said Sergey Chemezov, head of Rostec.

“The explosive can be delivered to target regardless of how well hidden it is. It operates ‘regardless of hidden terrains, at both high and low altitude,” he added.

According to the presentation shown at the Kalashnikov booth, the KYB drone can travel at speeds of 50-80 miles per hour, with a 6.6-pound warhead and flight duration of up to 30 minutes.

A video shows the takeoff, flight, and destruction of the target with a KUB-BLA, a slight variant of the KYB

“The drone was successfully tested and ready to go,” Rostec representatives told TASS during IDEX-2019.

Russia also claimed that is has started shipping Kalashnikov AK103, a third generation assault rifle, to Saudi Arabia under an arms deal signed between the two countries in 2017.

In the drone age, both US and Russia should fear the global proliferation of weaponized UAVs. More importantly, Russia strapping a small warhead to a drone that looks like it can be purchased on Amazon, suggests that small, weaponized drones on the modern battlefield will be the most feared military hardware in the next major conflict.

Orban Offers Lifetime Tax Amnesty To Hungarian Mothers Who Have 4 Or More Children

Hungarian President Viktor Orban delivered his state of the nation speech on Sunday, and for supporters of his nationalist, anti-immigration Fidesz Party, it did not disappoint.

Because, in a policy revelation that is sure to agitate George Soros, the European Commission (and Parliament) and every other supporter of the pro-immigration globalist policies that Orban opposes, the Hungarian leader declared that, from now on, all Hungarian women who give birth to four or more children will be permanently exempt from income tax…for life.

In his speech, Orban portrayed the policy as necessary for bolstering Hungary’s faltering birth rate without adopting more lax immigration policies, which other Western democracies see as the answer to their own demographic issues.

“There are fewer and fewer children born in Europe,” Mr Orban said during his annual State of the Nation address. “For the west, the answer is immigration. For every missing child there should be one coming in and then the numbers will be fine. But we do not need numbers. We need Hungarian children.”

The birth-rate tax plan was one of several initiatives unveiled by Orban, whose party won re-election last year by a wide margin. His policies enjoy broad support in Hungary, particularly in the countryside, though they have also encountered vociferious opposition from those whose political views are more closely aligned with Soros. Earlier this year, protesters nearly sacked the Hungarian Parliament after political opponents accused Fidesz of a blatant power grab by creating a new federal court that many feared would be used to crack down on political dissidents.

Orban

Other initiatives unveiled by the anti-immigration premier included an investment in healthcare worth Ft700bn ($2.4 billion); loans to newly-weds worth that could be partially, or fully, forgiven if the couple has two or three children in the years after the ceremony, and money for purchases of family cars – as well as increased funding to expand child-care facilities. Orban also promised mortgage-forgiveness tied to childbirth, and paternity or maternity leave tied to grandparents.

According to the FT, Hungary, like many of its neighbors in central and eastern Europe, struggles with some of the lowest fertility rates in the world, while many of its best-educated workers have traveled elsewhere on the Continent in search of better employment prospects. Its population is forecast to fall by 15% by 2050, from 9.7 million in 2017 to 8.3 million.

Orban’s government didn’t offer an estimate of the cost of the new measures, according to Reuters, and Orban’s chief of staff, Gergely Gulyas, said they would be financed from the country’s 2019 budget.

Here are some more details on Orban’s plan, courtesy of Reuters.

The new measures include the expansion of a loan program for families with at least two children to help them buy homes, subsidies for car purchases and waiving personal income tax for women raising at least four children.

Women below 40 who marry for the first time will be eligible for a 10 million forint ($36,000) subsidized loan, Orban said. A third of the debt will be forgiven when a second child is born and the entire loan waived after the third child.

The 2019 budget targets a deficit worth 1.8 percent of economic output. In January, it posted a 244.5 billion forint surplus, the highest in two decades, data showed.

Orban isn’t alone in pushing these types of incentives to inspire more couples to have more than one child. In recent years, both Poland and Serbia have adopted similar measures.

Other countries in the region have also offered incentives to raise the birth rate. In Poland, the conservative Law and Justice party rose to power in 2015 with an expensive pledge giving 500 zlotys (£100) a month, about one-third of the net minimum wage, for every second and subsequent child.

The initiative costs more than 1 per cent of Poland’s GDP Last spring, Serbia, which loses 30,000 people annually, introduced a 500m dinar (£3m) fund to provide payments worth 12,000 dinar for families with three children and 18,000 dinar for the fourth.

Allowing in more immigrants (particularly non-Christian immigrants) isn’t an option for Hungary, Orban said. Because it would risk Christians “eventually becoming a minority.”

He said that permitting migration resulted in “mixed population countries” in which Christians would eventually become a minority. “Those who ride that train will go to the last station and there’s no return ticket,” he said.

But while Soros is sure to oppose these policies, even as his “Open Society” organization has been exiled from the country, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said something with which, we imagine, Orban might agree: During a speech in Budapest, Pompeo warned about the growing influence of China and Russia in central Europe, and said he would try to make the case to Orban that doing business with Chinese telecoms giant Huawei might risk Hungary’s security, according to the Associated Press.

Huawei is a major player in the Hungarian telecoms space…and China’s growing influence in Hungary has been viewed with alarm by US officials.

China unveils tax cuts for graduates, low-income workers in stimulus drive

February 3, 2019

BEIJING (Reuters) – China will introduce tax breaks for small businesses run by recent graduates and low-income workers, according to a joint ministry announcement, as the country looks to boost spending and offset an economic slowdown.

Earlier this month China’s state planner said it would prioritize graduates and migrant workers in efforts to combat unemployment, which rose in the December quarter amid shrinking factory orders and lower consumer spending.

The cuts will target university graduates, self-employed people and those who have been unemployed for more than six months, said the Ministry of Finance, State Administration of Taxation and other departments in a joint statement released on Saturday.

People who are eligible for the scheme can deduct a total of 12,000 yuan ($1,779.73) from the taxes of their household over three years. The cuts take effect from January 1 and run until the end of 2021.

Companies who hire people designated as “needy” will also qualify for a tax deduction of 6,000 yuan per person per year for three years.

China has said it will introduce new stimulus measures this year after the Sino-U.S. trade war took a heavy toll on the economy in 2018.

The Finance Ministry this month said it will implement larger tax and fee cuts, targeting small firms and manufacturers, while the county’s state planner has unveiled incentives to boost retail spending.

Jon Snow – and death – take center stage in Game of Thrones trailer

January 14, 2019

LONDON (Reuters) – Final Season is coming – and it’s all about Jon Snow, and (just for a change) it portends death.

Or at least that’s the impression U.S. satellite network HBO chooses to give in the teaser for Game of Thrones that it unveiled on primetime TV on Sunday night.

The 1 minute 28 second clip trails the fantasy epic’s eighth and last series, which hits screens on April 14.

The scene takes place in the crypts below Winterfell, where we hear the voices of the late Ned and Catelyn Stark speak of Jon as he passes their statues.

Jon is joined by Sansa and Arya Stark, and as three of the surviving children of the show’s central clan walk further through the family crypt they arrive at a set of three statues that show … themselves.
