Travel agents tweak search options, bookings after Boeing groundings

March 13, 2019

(Reuters) – Travel websites have begun to respond to consumer concern and the grounding of Boeing’s 737 MAX planes by changing policies and introducing new options that exclude flights on those planes from customer queries.

Kayak.com is tweaking its search filters this week to allow customers to exclude particular types of aircraft from queries, the travel platform, part of the Booking.com stable of firms, told Reuters.

The changes come after a Boeing 737 MAX 8 crashed in Ethiopia on Sunday, killing all 157 people on board.

As a growing number of countries ban or ground 737 MAX planes, anxious travelers have taken to social media and travel agents to check if they are booked on these aircraft.

CWT, a privately held company that manages business travel, said some of its clients were interested in exploring the possibility of temporarily restricting travel on Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes.

“This could potentially result in travelers being left with fewer flight options and susceptible to higher airfares, depending on the route,” a CWT spokesman said.

Norwegian travel agent Berg-Hansen, dealing with cancellations of flights on Norwegian Air’s 737 MAX planes, said clients were primarily concerned with whether their flights were still running, and that the company was using alternative airlines including SAS, AirFrance and KLM to re-book.

Tennis: Stephens swatted aside by Vogele at Indian Wells

March 8, 2019

By Rory Carroll

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (Reuters) – Swiss qualifier Stefanie Vogele stunned world number four Sloane Stephens with a 6-3 6-0 win in their second-round match at the BNP Paribas Open on Friday as the American struggled amid gusting winds in the Southern California desert.

Vogele needed just over an hour to dispatch the fourth-seeded Stephens and push her overall record to 4-1 against the 2017 U.S. Open champion, who failed to make it past the tournament’s third round last year.

American Jennifer Brady defeated 19th-seeded Caroline Garcia 6-3 3-6 6-0 to punch her ticket to the third round.

The 23-year-old Brady thumped five aces en route to her third victory over the French this year.

Czech Marketa Vondrousova eased past an error-prone Daria Kasatkina 6-2 6-1.

With the loss the 14th-seeded Kasatkina, who was a finalist at the tournament last year, is projected to fall out of the top 20 when rankings are released after the tournament.

Garbine Muguruza broke American Lauren Davis for a speedy 6-1 6-3 win to send the Spanish 20th seed into the third round and keep her dreams of a maiden title in Indian Wells alive.

Yellow Vests Peacefully Protesting for 16th Week Fired with Tear Gas

Yellow Vests protesting for 16th week sprayed with tear gas by police

Yellow Vest protestors have peacefully taken to the streets of Paris for the 16th week in a row, despite being fired with tear gas by police.

The peaceful, orderly protest began at the Arc de Triomphe and ended at Place Denfert-Rochereau in the south of the city.

Rt.com reports: Videos taken by an RT France reporter even showed Yellow Vests and French police chatting amiably, with one protester even offering a riot cop a flower.

Police, however, later used tear gas on demonstrators who attempted to defy the pre-approved protest route by marching down New York Avenue

Similar marches are being held across France, but activists have expressed concern that the movement is losing momentum.

One Yellow Vest group on Facebook has called on demonstrators to return to the movement’s “spontaneous” roots with unsanctioned protests held at unauthorized locations.

The Yellow Vest movement began in November 2018 after French President Emmanuel Macron announced controversial tax hikes. Over 2,000 people have been arrested since the demonstrations began, and dozens of protesters have been injured during violent clashes with police.

Macron called for a “return to calm” on Friday, denouncing the “intolerable” violence that has resulted from the weeks of protests.

Golf: Johnson four clear of McIlroy after three rounds in Mexico

February 23, 2019

(Reuters) – Dustin Johnson drove the green at the par-four second hole for an eagle en route to a four-stroke lead over Rory McIlroy after the third round of the WGC-Mexico Championship on Saturday.

The hot start afforded the world number three the luxury of maintaining a healthy buffer despite a double-bogey at the 10th hole at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City.

The American shot five birdies as well as the eagle for five-under-par 66 to move to 16-under 197 for the tournament and remain on course for a second win in three years at the World Golf Championships event.

Northern Irishman McIlroy, who led after the opening round, mixed seven birdies with four bogeys for a 68 to stand alone in second place on 12-under.

Spaniard Sergio Garcia, Americans Patrick Reed and Patrick Cantlay and Australian Cameron Smith were a distant seven strokes back in a share of third.

Tiger Woods had problems on the greens, four-putting at the 15th and three-putting the next, to slip 10 strokes off the lead with a 70.

Natural treatments are catching on: 81% of people prefer a healthy lifestyle over drugs, according to study

(Natural News) When it comes to addressing health problems, there are two general paths you can take: the conventional medical approach or the natural route. Russian Warships Shadow US Destroyer Donald Cook In Latest Naval Close Encounter

In the latest indicator of heightened and ratcheting tensions between Moscow and the West, the Russian navy is reportedly shadowing an American warship, the USS Donald Cook, as it transits the Dardanelles Strait on Tuesday.

The US ship is en route to its second Black Sea deployment in only under a month, and fourth since the dangerous Kerch Strait incident.

A US Navy statement confirmed that the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer began transiting the strait on Tuesday on a mission to conduct what it called “maritime security operations” and to “enhance regional maritime stability” with NATO allies and partners in the region. According to Russia’s TASS news agency “the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s guard ship Pytlivy tracked the US vessel’s movements at the time.”

The US military newspaper Stars and Stripes additionally noted the Russians boasted of “continuously tracking” the Donald Cook’s movements since entering the region.

The Russian National Defense Control Center said Tuesday: “On February 19, 2019, at 05.00 pm Moscow time [14:00 GMT], US Navy Donald Cook guided-missile destroyer entered the Black Sea. Russia’s Black Sea Fleet assigned forces and means to continuously monitor the actions of the American destroyer.”

The United States’ Black Sea operations, which have routinely been dubbed “freedom of navigation” related deployments, come months after Washington and its allies condemned Russia’s seizure of three Ukrainian vessels and the arrest of 24 sailors in late November at the Kerch Strait. The Kremlin for its part condemned Ukrainian aggression and attempt to interfere in Russian naval operations.

The USS Donald Cook’s prior Black Sea operation involved naval drills with the Georgian Coast guard on Jan. 25 of this year. At that time US defense officials told CNN that its heightened Black Sea presence would be specifically in response to Russia’s actions against Ukraine during the Nov. 25 Kerch Strait incident

Prior to the late January operations the US Navy’s 6th Fleet said “We routinely conduct operations to advance security and stability throughout the US 6th Fleet area of operations to include the international waters and airspace of the Black Sea,” and further, “We reserve the right to operate freely in accordance with international laws and norms.”

Pentagon officials also previously addressed what the US sees as “expansive” maritime claims of Russia in the region, framing the comments in relation to the Kerch Strait incident. The US officials claimed that “Moscow lays claim to areas that far exceed the 12 miles from the Russian coastline that is guaranteed by international law,” according to CNN

NYPD Allegedly Tried to Cover Up MS-13 Illegal Alien Accused of Subway Shooting

Ramiro Gutierrez mugshot

The New York Police Department (NYPD) is accused of attempting to hide an MS-13 gang member in the U.S. illegally from the public eye after his Sunday arrest for allegedly shooting a rival gang member in broad daylight.

Ramiro Gutierrez, 26, has remained in NYPD custody since Monday, after authorities say he shot Abel Mosso, 20, on a crowded subway platform in Queens, New York.

Police, however, did not announce that Gutierrez had been formally charged with a crime until 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the New York Post reported.

Authorities then waited until Tuesday afternoon to tell reporters Gutierrez would be exiting the precinct en route to the courthouse in Queens at 4:00 p.m.

Instead, police scurried him away to the courthouse at 2:00 p.m. using a backdoor.

To add insult to injury, officials did not provide comment to reporters on whether Gutierrez had resided in the U.S. illegally.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials later confirmed with the Post that Gutierrez had been in the U.S. illegally, adding that they placed a detainer on him to deport him should he be released from custody.

Police sources said Gutierrez had a criminal history dating back to 2010 when police slapped him with a disorderly conduct summons. Since then, Gutierrez has racked up four felonies and at least nine misdemeanors — but five of his arrests were sealed.

For his most recent run-in with the law, the illegal alien had been out on $2,500 bail for a December 11 arrest on felony conspiracy charges for plotting a burglary when he allegedly shot Mosso. ICE officials said they were not aware Gutierrez had been in the U.S. illegally until Tuesday.

Despite the NYPD’s alleged attempts to keep Gutierrez out of the limelight, the Trump administration has used the case to make a case for securing the U.S. southern border.

Trump seized the opportunity to bring up the New York City subway shooting during his Tuesday evening State of the Union address as an example of how the “savage gang MS-13” is responsible for the illegal immigration crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Investigators say they have found body in wreckage of plane carrying soccer player Sala

February 4, 2019

LONDON (Reuters) – Air accident investigators said on Monday they had concluded the wreckage of a plane on the seabed near Guernsey was that of the missing aircraft carrying Premier League soccer player Emiliano Sala and that a body was visible inside.

The 28-year-old Argentina-born forward had been en route from Nantes in western France with pilot David Ibbotson to make his debut for Welsh team Cardiff City when the plane is believed to have crashed into the sea on Jan. 21

“Based on analysis of ROV (underwater remotely operated vehicle) video footage, the AAIB investigators on board the vessel concluded that the object is wreckage from the missing Piper Malibu aircraft,” Britain’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch said in a statement.

“Tragically, in video footage from the ROV, one occupant is visible amidst the wreckage. The AAIB is now considering the next steps, in consultation with the families of the pilot and passenger, and the police.”

Syrian civilians fleeing fighting need transit site, aid: UNHCR

February 1, 2019

GENEVA (Reuters) – The U.N. refugee agency said on Friday it had asked the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to designate a transit site en route to a camp where civilians fleeing fighting in the harsh winter can get life-saving aid after 29 children died.

SDF forces, led by the Kurdish YPG militia, are fighting Islamic State in the Hajin enclave of Deir al-Zor in the northeast. They are in “de facto” control of the transit zone, but have not replied to the request made two weeks ago, it said.

Civilians, mainly women and children, are fleeing towards al-Hol camp, whose population has tripled in two months to 33,000.

“The humanitarian situation in this part of Syria is critical right now. That’s why we are appealing for the safety of civilians, their ability to move out of the conflict zone, to be aided and provided with basic shelter and life-saving assistance,” Andrej Mahecic, spokesman of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), told reporters in Geneva.

At least 29 children and babies are reported to have died in the camp in northeastern Syria over the past eight weeks, mainly due to hypothermia and malnourishment, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Thursday.

“Humanitarian actors have collectively requested forces in control of the area designate a transit site en route for al-Hol where life-saving assistance can be provided,” Mahecic said.

“Little or no assistance is provided en route to the hungry and cold people, the vast majority of whom are women and children.”

SDF forces have also confiscated identity documents and restricted movement of displaced people in camps in Hasakah province, he said, calling for freedom of movement.

London Family Paying $96K Per Year For Live-In Soccer Coach To Make Sure Their Sons Go Pro

A London family is offering $96,000 per year (£75,000 ) to train their two sons to become professional soccer players, reports Business Insider.

According to the job posting, the 8 and 10-year-old children will require three two-hour after-school soccer practices, as well as an “intensive” three-week soccer camp in the summer.

Both parents are “willing to do pretty much anything to make sure our sons are able to follow their dreams,” so their kids can avoid the same fate as their father – who “was pushed down a more academic route by his parents.”

“This is something we never want to do to our boys,” said their mother. ” They’re both incredibly talented and easily the best in their teams, even at 8 and 10 years old. Obviously we know our requirements are unconventional, and a nanny with experience and contacts in professional football is like asking for a unicorn, but we can pay a £75,000 annual salary for the right candidate.”

Read the full job posting on Childcare.co.uk below:

My husband and I are both in our 40’s and have been working hard at our jobs for more than 20 years now, and whilst we both get a good wage, we have boring corporate jobs that neither of us particularly enjoy.

Being stuck doing something you dislike is a position we don’t want our children to ever be in, and we’re willing to do pretty much anything to make sure our sons are able to follow their dreams. Both of our boys dream to play football professionally, it’s all they talk about, and that’s why we want to give them the best possible chance to “make it”.

We’re looking for an ex-coach or player who has some childcare experience to be their nanny, whilst also helping them train. Aside from other childcare duties, we’d like them to train our boys for two hours after school three times during the week, as well as attend their matches with us on Sundays. We’d also like the selected candidate to run a three-week intensive football camp over the course of the six-week summer holidays.

The reason we’re so passionate about this is that when my husband was younger football was something he wanted to pursue, but he was pushed down a more academic route by his parents. This is something we never want to do to our boys. They’re both incredibly talented and easily the best in their teams, even at 8 and 10 years old.

Obviously we know our requirements are unconventional, and a nanny with experience and contacts in professional football is like asking for a unicorn, but we can pay a £75,000 annual salary for the right candidate. With this you’ll also get statutory sick pay, as well as 30 days holiday a year. We’re looking for someone to get started straight away on a six-month probationary contract initially, however if after the six months we’re happy then we’ll look at extending this to a year. We’re really hoping that someone can help us out, we know that the sooner kids start playing football seriously the higher their chances are of making it, so we want to get going asap!

As Business Insider points out, the if the scheme works out, the $500,000 or so over five years (the soonest the oldest child could go pro) might pay off in spades – as the average basic annual pay in England’s Premier League is around $3.8 million per first-team player.

New caravan crosses Guatemala, reaches Mexico en route to U.S.

As Republican lawmakers and the president call for border security, another caravan of Central American migrants has reached Mexico on its way to the U.S. According to reports, a group of roughly 500 migrants have arrived at the Guatemala-Mexican border.

Meanwhile, the core group of migrants of some 1,700 people is still pressing north through Guatemala.

OAN Newsroom

This new caravan left Honduras Tuesday, and has since grown in size as many parents with small children have joined the group along the way.

Honduras has tried to restrict the departures of children from the country, while the nation’s ambassador to Mexico is calling the caravan “a failure.”

“In terms of the original purpose, which was to request asylum in the United States, the caravan is a definite failure,” stated Ambassador Alden Rivera.”Not one single Honduran has been interviewed by the U.S. government, even though around 1,500 registered in the book to request an interview by the U.S. government.”

The Honduran ambassador also accused organizers of the caravan of seeking to discredit the governments of Central American nations.

Trump Tells Pelosi Her Trips Are Postponed Due To Shutdown Unless She Flies Commercial

Just one day after Speaker Pelosi chose to exercise her right to not invite the President to give his “State of the Union” address, Trump has responded.

In a letter to Nancy Pelosi, President Trump explains that he will be postponing her trip to various foreign countries due to the shutdown.

Dear Madame Speaker:

Due to the Shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed. We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over.

In light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate. I also feel that, during this period, it would be better if you were in Washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the Shutdown.

Obviously, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative.

I look forward to seeing you soon and even more forward to watching our open and dangerous Southern Border finally receive the attention, funding, and security it so desperately deserves!

Amusingly, Fox News reports that Speaker Pelosi was due to leave for her trip at 3pm.

Meanwhile, according to Fox News reporter, Chad Pergram, “furious calls” are going “back and forth” from The Hill to the State to the Pentagon and White House.

The Daily Caller’s Benny Johnson reports that the bus of congressional Democrats had already left the Capitol on it’s way to a military jet to fly to Europe, and were en route when they heard that Trump had canceled their trip, forcing the bus to turn around, and “members were “furious”.”

* * *

Judging by the level of rhetoric – we are absolutely nowhere near escaping the shutdown. Some overnight tweets from Trump say it all.

‘Tit’… meet ‘tat’

“It demeans the office is the presidency because it is so petty,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer says of Trump’s decision to deny Nancy Pelosi use of a military plane for a planned overseas trip (which we presume means he did not think Pelosi’s decision to rescind Trump’s SOTU speech invitation “demeaned the office of the Speaker”?)

Graham Calls On Trump “To Use Emergency Powers” To Build Wall

Sen. Lindsey Graham on Thursday called on President Trump to declare a national emergency in order to fund the construction of the US-Mexico border wall, after the latest round of negotiations in the Senate fell apart.

“Speaker Pelosi’s refusal to negotiate on funding for a border wall/barrier — even if the government were to be reopened — virtually ends the congressional path to funding for a border wall/barrier,” said Graham in a statement.

“It’s time for President Trump to use emergency powers to fund the construction of a border wall/barrier.”

I hope it works”

The statement follows failed negotiations led by Graham involving moderate GOP senators, some of whom blamed both President Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for being unwilling to compromise with each other.

Earlier Thursday we reported that the White House is preparing legal justification to declare a national emergency, according to CNN Chief National Security Correspondent, Jim Sciutto.

Trump, meanwhile, told reporters that he’ll “probably” declare a national emergency if the partial government shutdown drags on.

If Trump moves forward with that option, Graham told reporters that Congress could try to block it using a privileged motion.

“If he goes down that route, apparently under the statute the House can take up a privileged motion [and] disapprove the declaration,” said Graham. “It comes over here, Senate Democrats can insist we vote on it. And if you get a majority to disapprove it doesn’t go forward.”

At which point Trump can throw his hands up and tell his base that he did everything he could.

Pakistan suspends NATO supply route over security 26 Jul 2012 Pakistan has temporarily stopped NATO supply trucks crossing its northwestern border into Afghanistan over security concerns due to fears of Islamist attacks, officials said Thursday. Gunmen on Tuesday attacked a convoy of NATO supply trucks, killing a driver, in the town of Jamrud near the main northwestern city of Peshawar, in the first such attack since Pakistan lifted a seven-month blockade of the border. “Movement of NATO vehicles has been temporarily suspended since Wednesday evening to beef up security,” a paramilitary official told AFP.

Tab for alternate Afghan supply route hits $ 2.1 billion 30 Jun 2012 Pakistan’s refusal to let NATO access its ports and roads into Afghanistan has cost the Pentagon more than $ 2.1 billion in extra transportation costs to move supplies and equipment in and out of the country. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told the Senate Appropriations Committee in mid-June that the closure of the Pakistani routes was costing the U.S. military about an extra $ 100 million per month. These new costs were disclosed in a Pentagon budget document – called the omnibus reprogramming request – sent to Congress on Friday.

Workplace Auditor Finds ‘Tons of Issues’ at Apple’s Manufacturer Foxconn

By Peter Burrows – Bloomberg.com

The Fair Labor Association, a watchdog monitoring working conditions at makers of Apple Inc. products, has uncovered “tons of issues” that need to be addressed at a Foxconn Technology Group plant in Shenzhen, China, FLA Chief Executive Officer Auret van Heerden said.

Van Heerden made the comments in a telephone interview after a multiday inspection of the factory. Apple, the first technology company to join the FLA, said on Feb. 13 that it asked the Washington-based nonprofit organization to inspect plants owned by three of its largest manufacturing partners.

“We’re finding tons of issues,” van Heerden said en route to a meeting where FLA inspectors were scheduled to present preliminary findings to Foxconn management. “I believe we’re going to see some very significant announcements in the near future.”

He declined to elaborate on the findings. The FLA plans to release more information about its inspection in the coming weeks. By then, the company will have had a chance to contest or agree to steps to prevent further violations.

TSA Directly Violated US Constitution By Detaining Senator Rand Paul

(PRISON PLANET)   In preventing Kentucky Senator Rand Paul from flying to Washington this morning, the TSA directly violated the law as written in the US Constitution.

The Constitution specifically protects federal lawmakers from being detained while en route to Washington DC.

Article I, Section 6 states:

“The Senators and Representatives…shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same….”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_E6jp0PLDU

Rand Paul was travelling from his home in Louisville to attend a session in the Senate today.

This is the reason that TSA officials have since put out the talking point in the media that Rand Paul was never officially detained, despite the fact that the Senator himself confirmed that he was told to sit in a cubicle and wait without any indication of when he would be allowed to leave.

The Senate is back in session at 2 p.m., and votes are scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Senator Paul was allowed to board a second flight after a separate screening by TSA agents, however, it remains to be seen whether he will make it to the capital in time.
