Facebook now posts your friend’s phone numbers

The following status began popping up on an increasing number of friend’s status today. When I did as suggested, I was shocked to see that hundreds had their telephone numbers available.

Warning: ALL THE PHONE NUMBERS of your friends are now posted on Facebook! No joke – go to the top right of the screen, click on Account, then click on Edit Friends, go left on the screen and click on Contacts. All phone numbers are published!! Please repost this on your Status, so your friends can remove their numbers and thus prevent abuse if they do not want them published. This is unreal.

Facebook does have a message instructing you to turn synchronization off on your phone via their Facebook app, as well as a link to turn this feature off. It is just a little frightening how it is on by default at the roll-out of the new feature. The fact that Facebook is participating in the OpenID program as of 2009 makes the concerns of many regarding privacy even more alarming.


How To Disable Facebook’s New Facial Recognition Feature

Facebook has rolled out a new feature that relies on facial recognition technology to automatically identify users in photos posted to the site and recommend people that others can tag in these images.

The feature, which was already live in the U.S., is now being launched in “most countries,” according to Facebook, and has led privacy advocates to chastise the social network.
