Real Reason Behind Washington’s Huawei Ban: US Wants To Spy And China Won’t Cooperate

The UK, Germany, India, and the United Arab Emirates are among the countries resisting US pressure to ban Huawei.

The New York Times reports U.S. Campaign to Ban Huawei Overseas Stumbles as Allies Resist.

Over the past several months, American officials have tried to pressure, scold and, increasingly, threaten other nations that are considering using Huawei in building fifth-generation, or 5G, wireless networks. Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state, has pledged to withhold intelligence from nations that continue to use Chinese telecom equipment. The American ambassador to Germany cautioned Berlin this month that the United States would curtail intelligence sharing if that country used Huawei.

But the campaign has run aground. Britain, Germany, India and the United Arab Emirates are among the countries signaling they are unlikely to back the American effort to entirely ban Huawei from building their 5G networks. While some countries like Britain share the United States’ concerns, they argue that the security risks can be managed by closely scrutinizing the company and its software.

The United States is not ready to admit defeat, but its campaign has suffered from what foreign officials say is a scolding approach and a lack of concrete evidence that Huawei poses a real risk. It has also been hampered by a perception among European and Asian officials that President Trump may not be fully committed to the fight.

Mr. Trump has repeatedly undercut his own Justice Department, which unveiled sweeping criminal indictments against Huawei and its chief financial officer with accusations of fraud, sanctions evasion and obstruction of justice. Mr. Trump has suggested that the charges could be dropped as part of a trade deal with China. The president previously eased penalties on another Chinese telecom firm accused of violating American sanctions, ZTE, after a personal appeal by President Xi Jinping of China.

One senior European telecommunications executive said that no American officials had presented “actual facts” about China’s abuse of Huawei networks.

US Threats and Bullying

The American ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, wrote a letter a letter to Berlin, warning of repercussions should it use Huawei. Germany politely told the Trump administration to go to hell according to the Times.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel responded Germany was “defining our standards for ourselves.”

Cut Back Or Else

In a letter to the country’s economics minister, U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard A. Grenell wrote allowing the participation of Huawei or other Chinese equipment vendors in the 5G project would mean the U.S. won’t be able to maintain the same level of cooperation with German security agencies. The letter marks the first known time the U.S. has explicitly warned an ally that refusing to ostracize Huawei could lessen security cooperation with Washington. Among other things, European security agencies have relied heavily on U.S. intelligence in the fight against terrorism.

Mr. Grenell’s letter notes that secure communications systems are essential for defense and intelligence cooperation, including within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and that companies such as Huawei and state-controlled ZTE Corp. could compromise the confidentiality of these exchanges.

His letter noted that under Chinese legislation, Chinese companies could be compelled to assist their country’s vast security apparatus without any democratic checks and balances, and that it would be impossible to mitigate that risk. He also noted that the code running on 5G equipment would need frequent updates and was so complex that the potential for so-called backdoors and other system vulnerabilities couldn’t be ruled out even if Huawei were to let regulators regularly inspect its software.

Huawei, which is an employee-owned company, has strongly denied that it has ever spied for the Chinese government or would consider doing so.

Germany’s Concerns

There is no evidence. Germany’s concerns are understandable.

  1. Germany uses Huawei equipment for its 4G network. To be backward compatible, Germany needs to use Huawei for 5G.

  2. Other vendors would be far more expensive.

  3. Selecting another vendor might set Germany back two years.

  4. The number of Trump’s demands on the EU have escalated and the EU is sick of Trump’s sanctions, meddling, and overall pettiness that isn’t consistent or believable in many cases.

I side with Germany on all counts.

But it’s a Financial Times article that really explains what’s going on. “The proliferation of our technology hampers American efforts to spy on whomever it wants,” says Huawei executiuve Guo Ping in an Op-Ed article US Attacks on Huawei Betray its Fear of Being Left Behind.

Ping points out that the US’s NSA sought to “collect it all”, every phone call or communication in the world.

If the NSA wants to modify routers or switches in order to eavesdrop, a Chinese company will be unlikely to co-operate. This is one reason why the NSA hacked into Huawei’s servers. “Many of our targets communicate over Huawei-produced products,” a 2010 NSA document states. “We want to make sure that we know how to exploit these products.”

Unconstitutional Ban

US is Behind, Fears It Cannot Manipulate Huawei

It’s not fear of Chinese spying, but rather Huawei will make US spying more difficult.

The top secret documents leaked by whistle blower hero Edward Snowden prove the US spied on anything and everything including Chancellor Merkel.

Secondly, China invested far more in 5G technology than the US. Eliminating Huawei is one way to catch up.

Germany protested not only because Huawei would be backward compatible and cheaper, but also because there was no other competition that had Huawei’s features, at any price.

No Evidence

It is not surprising in the least that the US has conjured up fantasies that are roughly 180 degrees opposite of the view it presents in its bullying efforts.

Despite demands of evidence by China, Germany, the UK and other countries that China poses a risk, the US has not shared a shred of evidence with anyone.

The logical conclusion is the US has nothing but conjecture and a pack of lies.

Researcher Warns: Algos Are “Using And Even Controlling Us!”

One researcher is warning everyone that  “we are setting ourselves up for technological domination.” Dionysios Demetis warned that algorithms are “using and even controlling” human beings.

Humans are surrounded by algorithms and one researcher is not all that thrilled about the future prospects of technology and its grip on humanity. 

“Our exploration led us to the conclusion that, over time, the roles of information technology and humans have been reversed,” Demetis, a professor at the Center for Systems Studies at Hull University in Yorkshire England, wrote in an essay for The Conversation. 

“In the past, we humans used technology as a tool. Now, technology has advanced to the point where it is using and even controlling us.”

This is not the first time Demetis has tried to warn humanity of the problems with advanced technology either. Demetis built on a paper he published last year with Allen Lee, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, in the Journal of the Association for Information Systems. The researcher also contends that we are in fact “deeply affected by them in unpredictable ways,” and humans made it that way. 

 “We have progressively restricted our own decision-making capacity and allowed algorithms to take over.”

Demetis says that the worst case scenario would be a complete takeover of machines and artificial intelligence.  Already, most of the trading in foreign exchange markets is determined by algorithms that call the shots within tiny fractions of a second as opposes to humans, who are now seen as an “impediment.”

 “The people running the trading system had come to see human decisions as an obstacle to market efficiency,” Demetis wrote. Lawyers are also being replaced by artificial intelligence and some recruiters have an over-reliance on third-party tools to “weed out bad candidates.”

This can set up humanity for a bleak and dystopian future where we will have no control over anything – machines will make all of our decisions for us.  “We need to decide, while we still can, what this means for us both as individuals and as a society.”

Dozens of people were killed Friday in shootings at two mosques in the city of Christchurch.
One of the shooters appears to have livestreamed the attack on Facebook (FB). The disturbing video, which has not been verified by CNN, purportedly shows a gunman walking into a mosque and opening fire.
“New Zealand Police alerted us to a video on Facebook shortly after the livestream commenced and we quickly removed both the shooter’s Facebook and Instagram accounts and the video,” Mia Garlick, Facebook’s director of policy for Australia and New Zealand, said in a statement.

What we know

Hours after the attack, however, copies of the gruesome video continued to appear on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, raising new questions about the companies’ ability to manage harmful content on their platforms.
Facebook is “removing any praise or support for the crime and the shooter or shooters as soon as we’re aware,” Garlick said.
Twitter (TWTR) said it suspended an account related to the shooting and is working to remove the video from its platform.
YouTube, which is owned by Google (GOOGL), removes “shocking, violent and graphic content” as soon as it is made aware of it, according to a Google spokesperson.
New Zealand police asked social media users to stop sharing the purported shooting footage and said they were seeking to have it taken down.
CNN is choosing not to publish additional information regarding the video until more details are available.

Tech firms ‘don’t see this as a priority’

This is the latest case of social media companies being caught off guard by killers posting videos of their crimes, and other users then sharing the disturbing footage. It has happened in the United States, Thailand, Denmark and other countries.
Friday’s video reignites questions about how social media platforms handle offensive content: Are the companies doing enough to try to catch this type of content? How quickly should they be expected to remove it?
“While Google, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter all say that they’re cooperating and acting in the best interest of citizens to remove this content, they’re actually not because they’re allowing these videos to reappear all the time,” said Lucinda Creighton, a senior adviser at the Counter Extremism Project, an international policy organization.
Facebook’s artificial intelligence tools and human moderators were apparently unable to detect the livestream of the shooting. The company says it was alerted to it by New Zealand police.
“The tech companies basically don’t see this as a priority, they wring their hands, they say this is terrible,” Creighton said. “But what they’re not doing is preventing this from reappearing.”
The spread of the video could inspire copycats, said CNN legal enforcement analyst Steve Moore, a retired supervisory special agent for the FBI.
“What I would tell the public is this: Do you want to help terrorists? Because if you do, sharing this video is exactly how you do it,” Moore said.
“Do not share the video or you are part of this,” he added.

Millions of Chinese citizens now banned from travel under China's new social credit system

Millions of Chinese citizens are now banned from buying flights and train tickets under the new social credit system, according to a document obtained from the National Public Credit Information Center.

The document details how 17.5 million flight tickets and 5.5 million train tickets were blocked in 2018 because the citizens attempting to purchase them were on the government’s blacklist for social credit offences.

Zerohedge.com reports: The Communist Party of China (CPC) says the social credit system is an essential component of the Socialist market economic system and the social governance system. Its aim is to encourage trustworthy behavior through a blend of penalties and rewards for citizens to improve a fast-changing society after three decades of economic reform. Offenses can include failure to pay taxes or fines, jaywalking, smoking, shoplifting, or taking drugs. Penalties include restrictions on travel, business, obtaining loans, or access to education. Companies can lose access to low-interest bank loans or be dropped from government contracts.

One government slogan for the scheme says: “Once you lose trust, you will face restrictions everywhere.”

The social control system is part of efforts by President Xi Jinping’s Communist regime to use artificial intelligence and surveillance cameras to control more than a billion people.

CPC launched social credit in 2014 and is currently piloting it in multiple cities around China. The system is expected to roll out nationwide by 2020, giving the government control to almost all people and businesses.

Human rights activists warn that social credit is too hard on citizens and might unfairly label people as untrustworthy without telling them.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence condemned social credit in October as “an Orwellian system premised on controlling virtually every facet of human life.”

AP said some of the offenses last year penalized people for false advertising or violating drug safety rules.

Since inception, the system has caused 3.5 million people to “voluntarily fulfill their legal obligations,” the report said, which included 37 people who paid a total of 150 million yuan ($22 million) in overdue fines or confiscations.

The report gave limited details on how many citizens live in areas where social credit is operating.

In the West, social credit is very controversial and is often portrayed as a futuristic society controlled by the illusion of a perfect society through artificial intelligence and surveillance cameras.

SoftBank’s Son finds more love for early-stage investing, new fund planned

SEOUL/TOKYO (Reuters) – SoftBank Group Corp has expanded its appetite for early-stage startups, with a venture capital unit set to launch its biggest fund for early investments as it opens new offices in Asia.

The global fund from newly rebranded Seoul-based SoftBank Ventures Asia will be worth as much as $500 million and could launch next month, its CEO JP Lee told Reuters in an interview.

By contrast, the average size of similar funds raised last year was just over $100 million, according to data provider Preqin.

SoftBank, South Korea’s National Pension Service as well as other companies and asset management firms will provide funding, Lee said, declining to provide further details on investors.

“It’s an important signal within the SoftBank Group that SoftBank thinks early-stage investments are important and will make continued efforts on them,” said Lee.

The move comes as SoftBank rapidly transforms beyond telecoms into a tech investing giant.

In addition to the $100 billion Saudi-backed SoftBank Vision Fund that has made big investments in firms like Uber, SoftBank said on Thursday it was launching a $5 billion fund focused on Latin America.

The bigger remit for SoftBank Ventures Asia, which describes itself as the group’s global arm for early-stage investing, came after a successful presentation to SoftBank founder and CEO Masayoshi Son last October, Lee said.

Tasked by Son to explain why the SoftBank should keep investing in early-stage startups, Lee on a visit to the group’s Tokyo offices invoked the words of Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma: “small guys become big guys”.

In doing so, he harkened back to Son’s most spectacular startup jackpot – his 2000 investment of $20 million in the Chinese e-commerce firm. SoftBank’s current Alibaba stake is worth around $130 billion.

Three months later, SoftBank Ventures Korea was relaunched as SoftBank Ventures Asia and it now plans to open offices and hire investment managers in Singapore and Shanghai. It currently has teams in Seoul, Beijing, San Francisco, and Tel Aviv.

Son provides guidance while individual investment decisions are made by Lee and his team, Lee said. The unit declined to comment on how many new people may be hired.

The unit was born in 2000 at a boom time for South Korean startups, expanding its focus beyond that country in 2011. Around half of its investments have been early stage.

SoftBank Group and its portfolio companies also make early-stage investments. Many of these are not disclosed by SoftBank and lack of clarity on their valuations complicate investors’ efforts to quantify SoftBank’s worth, said Dan Baker, an analyst at Morningstar.

The new fund, called the SoftBank Acceleration Fund, follows the launch of a $300 million China-focused fund in September. The unit, which has $1.1 billion under management, had until then focused on funds worth under $200 million.

To date, the unit has taken stakes in over 250 companies across 10 countries, including South Korean gaming company Nexon Co, which listed in Japan in 2011, and Indonesian e-commerce firm Tokopedia.

It currently concentrates on firms involved in artificial intelligence, connected devices and robotics.

In keeping with Son’s practice of promoting ties between portfolio companies to boost their growth, Lee said Singapore-based used car trading platform Carro, which the unit has a stake in, had been introduced to SoftBank portfolio company Grab for potential collaboration.

And another company it has invested in, camera app operator Snow China, is using technology from artificial intelligence firm SenseTime.

SoftBank and its Vision Fund have invested more than $600 million in SenseTime, valuing it in the most recent round at $7.6 billion, a source familiar with the matter said, declining to be identified because the information is not public. SenseTime declined to comment.

Lindsey Graham Doubles Down On FISA Abuse Probe As House Democrats Fire Up Post-Mueller Investigations

Days after the Democrat-controlled House Judiciary Committee fired off 81 document requests for their post-Mueller investigations (in anticipation of a ‘disappointing’ Mueller report) – Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham has revived his committee’s probe into potential surveillance abuse by the FBI.

In a Thursday letter to Attorney General William Barr – just three weeks on the job, Graham asked for all FBI and DOJ documents which would explain what steps were taken to verify the Steele dossier before it was used by the FBI to obtain a surveillance warrant on a Trump campaign staffer. 

The FBI relied heavily on Steele’s report to obtain four Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants against former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

Republicans investigated whether the FBI misled the FISA court by relying on the dossier even though its allegations about Page were unverified. They also asserted the FBI failed to tell surveillance court judges that Steele was working on behalf of the DNC and Clinton campaign on an investigation of Donald Trump. –Daily Caller

Graham also notified Barr that he is investigating the FBI’s original decision making process behind opening up investigations of Trump campaign associates in 2016 – including, we assume, the decision to infiltrate the campaign using Stefan Halper – a former Oxford University professor and longtime intelligence asset who was paid over $1 million by the Obama Department of Defense between 2012 and 2018, with nearly half of it surrounding the 2016 US election. 

Furthermore, Graham has requested: 

  • All documents and communications originally shared with the Gang of Eight in May 2018 related to the Russia investigation. 
  • All “FD-302” forms for former DOJ #4 Bruce Ohr and any other individual at the Department, the FBI, or elsewhere in the federal government who received information from individuals outside the Department or the FBI that was used in the Carter Page FISA applications. 

A “302” serves to “report or summarize” witness interviews involved in FBI investigations – while Ohr’s testimony was recently found to have contradicted that of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson.

China’s Social Credit System Just Blocked Tens Of Millions Of Plane And Train Tickets

China’s social credit system prevented people from buying 17.5 million flights and 5.5 million train tickets in 2018, according to the Associated Press, which obtained a document from the National Public Credit Information Center.

The AP reports that millions were attempting to make travel purchases were blocked because they ended up on the government’s blacklist for social credit offenses. The report didn’t discuss how these people had become “discredited.”

Czech cyber watchdog says its Huawei warning took U.S. by surprise

PRAGUE (Reuters) – The Czech cyber-security watchdog was not pressured by the United States or anyone else into issuing its warning about the possible security risks posed by Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei, Prague’s cyber attache to Washington told Reuters.

Rather, its December warning took both the United States and Huawei by surprise, Daniel Bagge, the Washington-based representative for the NUKIB watchdog said in an interview.

The United States has urged allies not to use products made by Huawei, the world’s biggest maker of telecoms equipment, saying they could enable Chinese state espionage.

No evidence has been produced publicly and Huawei has repeatedly denied the allegations. But several Western countries have restricted, or are considering restricting, the company’s access to their markets, fuelling speculation of U.S. pressure.

Bagge, however, said NUKIB reached its own conclusions on Huawei and Chinese peer ZTE based on “information from the public domain as well as classified information and information from partners in the intelligence community.”

“We did not consult (about) the warning in any way with the United States nor anyone else. The December warning surprised the U.S. authorities as much as it surprised Huawei.”

His comments, on a trip to Prague, shed light on a decision that thrust the Czech Republic, a small central European country that has attracted much Chinese investment, into the center of a debate about whether Huawei technology poses security risks.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis is due to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in the White House on Thursday for talks that will touch in part on security.

Bagge said the Czech stance on Huawei might have expedited Washington’s invitation to Babis, echoing information from diplomatic sources.

Babis, who has criticized NUKIB for lack of clarity in its warning but said the government has to follow its advice, is also due to meet CIA director Gina Haspel on Wednesday.

NUKIB’s warning did not amount to a Czech ban on Huawei and ZTE technology, but required 160 public and private operators of critical infrastructure to analyze any risks and act accordingly.

No Czech telecoms operator has so far barred Huawei from supplying 5G technology. But NUKIB’s action led the Czech tax authority to exclude Huawei from a tender, later canceled.

The Czech move was prompted in part by Chinese legislation rather than purely technological issues, Bagge said. A 2017 Chinese law requires any domestic organization to “…support, cooperate with, and collaborate in national intelligence work”.

Huawei has denied its products are equipped with back doors to allow access by the Chinese government. It has said it wants to solve the Czech situation in a “friendly and open way”, but has not ruled out defending itself in court.

Clinton Foundation gave top secret intel to Russia and FBI helped cover it up, new intelligence proves

The Clinton Foundation gave top secret U.S. intelligence to Russia and the DOJ/FBI covered it up, according to bombshell new evidence. 

A 2016 investigation revolved around the illegal sale of controlled US Homeland Security technology to Russia and China before the 2016 election by a company named AGT.

The DOJ terminated its internal investigation in 2016 despite clear and irrefutable evidence of criminal activity and hid it from the public!

In Part II of our series we discussed the illegal actions that AGT International took to generate revenues around the globe. Highly sensitive US defense technology and ITAR classified products were provided to China, Russia and other countries in the name of sales growth. These actions were beyond criminal, they were treasonous.

In Part III of our series we discussed the investigation that the FBI/DOJ started into AGT and the Clinton Foundation but then terminated and covered up before the 2016 Presidential election despite irrefutable crimes!

In Part IV of our series we discussed the activities by individuals associated with AGT in obtaining entrance to a highly sensitive US Intel facility circumventing the controls in place that prevent illegal entries to the facility.

Today we discuss the efforts by AGT to obtain top secret US Intel for the sole purpose of selling to the Russians.  AGT personnel used the information as a means to entice sales from US adversaries.

As noted in our prior post, 4D Security Solutions (an AGT company) was a major defense contractor for entities like the US Navy, the Philadelphia Police Department and the US Department of Homeland Security.

At least one of AGT’s companies, 4D Security Solutions, provided its products to a facility that was regulated by the US government and required screening and a US passport in order to enter it.

 

As noted in our prior post, in 2014, while AGT was actively selling its Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) products worldwide, three of its executives, Jason Stark, Geoffrey Baird, and Zvi Moskowitz visited the DVIC in Philadelphia in order to collect intelligence and operational information about the secure site. This visit was arranged and scheduled via back channels.

Per the details of their meeting invite, these AGT top executives were to call an individual by the name of Justin Frank as soon as they approached the DVIC facility.  Frank is a detective at the Philadelphia Police Department and he also works for a company called Intuidex.

The DVIC that these individuals wanted to visit is a secure location that permits only US citizens with special permits to enter. The DVIC tracks and maintains information that is top secret including intercepts and files on terrorism, gangs, etc.

The startling observation of the visit to the DVIC by the group from AGT is that this group appeared to circumvent the procedures in place to prevent illegal entry to the site. This is evident from the visit scheduling details. The parties involved utilized private email communications to workout the details, and curtailed official vetting, approval, and background checks, which apparently were never conducted.

Baird and reportedly Moshkovitz were not US citizens. For them to enter the DVIC facility an enormous amount of checks and verifications were to take place but there is no evidence that these activities took place.

As noted previously, from the information collected and subsequent discussions with AGT international management, it is clear that the purpose of these visits was to extract high value intelligence and operational data and then use it for financial gain and sell it or exchange it abroad. These actions were in the least suspect but probably criminal.

AGT International collected this information from various US based defense, law enforcement, intelligence and security sources on a regular basis.  As can be seen from the internal communication by senior AGT executives, this was not a one off.

The next image shows more internal communications regarding the need for RTCC information.  It has all of the AGT leaders and other of the company’s senior leadership team on the distribution list.

The next image shows a meeting to discuss the RTCC project in one of the former Soviet Union countries (Kazakhstan)  with pricing information at $1.5 million.  In the email “C” stands for Israel.

The next four images contain detailed discussions about what was going to be given to the Russians when they come over for a physical visit.  In these emails “MM” stands for MasterMind which is an Intel platform.  Also note that that Lenz Gadi is using the 4D security email in these exchanges.  He is a US employee working for a US regulated defense company with secret clearance (they provide services, software, hardware, etc. to the Feds) and he is leading the effort to do the exchange with the Russians.  This preparation for the face to face meetings with the Russians shows that the Russians want to see basically everything, not just MM.

In the last part of the email above there is an exchange that shows an individual in Russia forwarding instructions to individuals at AGT (including its CEO Mati Kochavi) that indicate after the NDA is signed “we may start to exchange the information”.

What information is this email above referring to?  It’s suspected that the information is highly sensitive US defense Intel obtained on US facilities serviced by AGT!

The next image shows the NYPD Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) data input screen.

Urban Shield is another RTCC type system that was provided by AGT.

This next slide shows the cyber security features of the Wisdom related products.  The slide shows that the system features include “realtime” views with a “zero day database”.   These are terms computer geeks would commonly use to define time frames related to hacking.  Also, this slide describes “Metasploit frameworks” which use the penetration testing software Metasploit.

What we are talking about here is a cyber attack system using the Metasploit framework which has the ability to execute remote attacks (like the alleged DNC/HRC type hacks).  Basically AGT is offering the Russians a state of the art cyber attack system with the latest technology.

This final slide shows more of AGT’s Wisdom and MM features.  Note that “CI operations and planning”  is really counter Intel capabilities.  In other words, AGT is offering the Russians the ability to conduct counter-Intel operations (e.g. cell phone intercepts, object and vehicle tracking, etc.).  Also, “OSINT integration” allows the Russians to tie into the Internet into these operations.  All of this information provided to the Russians was super classified and never should have been placed in their hands.

The AGT family of companies participated in numerous suspect, if not criminal activities.  The leaders of the company were Clinton friends and major donors to the Clinton Foundation. The Clintons in turn helped promote AGT.

AGT then participated in numerous shady and criminal activities, the worst of which were selling US ITAR regulated products and information to the Russians and Chinese.

The DOJ/FBI started an investigation of AGT but then covered it up.  The investigation into the Clinton Foundation and AGT was material to the 2016 US election and yet the FBI and DOJ concealed it from the American public.

The Clinton Foundation and the DOJ and FBI must be investigated and the crimes committed by these entities must be brought to justice!

Gene Edited CRISPR Twins May Have Higher IQ and Silicon Valley Wants to Exploit the Technology

Critics worry that CRISPR technology could one day be used to create super-intelligent humans, perhaps as part of a biotechnology race between the US and China. Silicon Valley has a keen interest in designer babies with higher intelligence.

A pair of Chinese twins who were gene-edited for resistance to HIV may also have ‘supercharged’ brains, along with possible resistance to age-related cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer’s. 

In a controversial experiment led by Chinese scientist He Jiankui, the embroys of seven couples had their genes “edited” using a tool known as CRISPR. By removing a gene called CCR5, Jiankui sought to create a natural immunity to HIV – which requires CCR5 to enter blood cells. 

Based on new research, however, Jiankui may have also left the twins, Lulu and Nana, with improved memory and enhanced cognition, according to MIT Technology Review. They may also enjoy some degree of protection from Alzheimer’s Disease and other maladies which are rapidly being linked to chronic inflammation, as some groups of mice without CCR5 – or who have been given CCR5 inhibitors, experience less severe dementia or Alzheimer’s symptoms.

“The answer is likely yes, it did affect their brains,” says UCLA neurobiologist Alcino J. Silva, whose lap discovered a link between CCR5 and the brain’s ability to form new connections. 

“The simplest interpretation is that those mutations will probably have an impact on cognitive function in the twins,” says Silva, adding that the exact effect on the girls’ cognition cannot be predicted, which is “why it should not be done.”

Jiankui’s human experiments drew harsh rebuke after news of Lulu and Nana’s birth in late October or early November, and has reportedly been fired from his position at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen, China. Jiankui says there are more gene-edited babies on the way. 

The experiment has been widely condemned as irresponsible, and He is under investigation in China. News of the first gene-edited babies also inflamed speculation about whether CRISPR technology could one day be used to create super-intelligent humans, perhaps as part of a biotechnology race between the US and China.

There is no evidence that He actually set out to modify the twins’ intelligence. MIT Technology Review contacted scientists studying the effects of CCR5 on cognition, and they say the Chinese scientist never reached out to them, as he did to others from whom he hoped to get scientific advice or support. –MIT Technology Review

In 2016, Silva and professor Miou Zhou of the Western University of Health Sciences in California showed that removing the CCR5 gene from mice significantly improved their memory. Moreover, ” Silva and a large team from the US and Israel say they have new proof that CCR5 acts as a suppressor of memories and synaptic connections,” according to the report. 

According to their new report, appearing in the journal Cell, people who naturally lack CCR5 recover more quickly from strokes. What’s more, people missing at least one copy of the gene seem to go further in school, suggesting a possible role in everyday intelligence. –MIT Technology Review

“We are the first to report a function of CCR5 in the human brain, and the first to report a higher level of education,” said UCLA biologist S. Thomas Carmichael – who led the study. 

Silicon Valley wants in on it

Silva tells the MIT Technology Review that “because of his research, he sometimes interacts with figures in Silicon Valley and elsewhere who have, in his opinion, an unhealthy interest in designer babies with better brains.” 

When word of Jiankui’s experiment went public, Silva says he immediately questioned whether enhanced cognition was the real goal of the experiment. 

“I suddenly realized—Oh, holy shit, they are really serious about this bullshit,” said Silva. “My reaction was visceral repulsion and sadness.”

He Jiankui acknowledged that he knew about the potential cognitive benefits of removing the CCR5 gene discovered by the UCLA team during a Q&A session, though he said “I am against using genome editing for enhancement.”

The benefits of CCR5 removal are currently being tested on both stroke patients and people with HIV-induced memory issues. 

In those studies, one of which is under way at UCLA, people are being given an anti-HIV drug, Maraviroc, which chemically blocks CCR5, to see if it improves their cognition.

Silva says there is a big difference between trying to correct deficits in such patients and trying to create enhancement. “Cognitive problems are one of the biggest unmet needs in medicine. We need drugs, but it’s another thing to take normal people and muck with the DNA or chemistry to improve them,” he says. “We simply don’t know enough to do it. Nature has struck a very fine balance.” –MIT Technology Review

“Could it be conceivable that at one point in the future we could increase the average IQ of the population? I would not be a scientist if I said no. The work in mice demonstrates the answer may be yes,” said Silva. “But mice are not people. We simply don’t know what the consequences will be in mucking around. We are not ready for it yet.”

Lyft to woo investors with fast U.S. growth in IPO race with Uber

SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK (Reuters) – Lyft Inc will pitch investors on its fast growth in the United States as it seeks to beat out Uber Technologies Inc to become the first publicly listed ride-hailing company, according to people familiar with the matter.

Lyft plans to tell investors its U.S. market share is approaching 40 percent, up from 35 percent in early 2018, the people said. The company has pushed aggressively into smaller and mid-sized cities. Lyft currently serves more than 600 American and Canadian cities, three times more than in early 2017.

San Francisco-based Lyft is under pressure to sell investors on its prospects as it races neck-and-neck with Uber to an initial public offering (IPO) that could come as early as the second quarter of 2019.

If Lyft gets to list first, it would avoid being judged by the valuation given to its larger rival.

Uber remains the undisputed king of ride-hailing in terms of size. Its revenue for the third quarter of 2018 was $2.95 billion, up 38 percent from the prior year. It operates in about 70 countries and also has businesses in freight hauling, autonomous driving, food delivery, air taxis and artificial intelligence research.

In contrast, Lyft is available only in the United States and Canada. And it has stayed tightly focused on its core ride-hailing service. Lyft has kept its financials secret.

It is estimated to be worth between $20 billion and $30 billion, compared to Uber’s prospects for a valuation of up to $120 billion. So Lyft will be seeking to assure IPO investors it represents an attractive bet compared to its more established competitor, people familiar with its marketing strategy said.

Lyft has benefited from a spate of scandals that rocked Uber in 2017, including allegations of sexual harassment made by its female employees, the forced resignation of its chief executive officer and its use of illicit software to deceive regulators. A #DeleteUber campaign surged on social media. The negative publicity helped Lyft attract new drivers and riders without spending much on marketing.

Given that both Uber and Lyft are still losing money, investors will be focused on their growth and potential for future profitability. Lyft has prepared some earnings metrics it hopes will persuade investors that it will not be in the red for long, the people familiar with its strategy said.

These include its overall growth in ride bookings, the total number of rides per passenger, the commissions it earns from drivers, and the percentage of rides across its different ride types, particularly its growing carpooling service, the people said.

Lyft declined to comment.

“The IPO market will be focused on growth,” said Jim Williams, chief investment officer of Creative Planning Inc, a wealth and investment manager in Overland Park, Kansas. His firm advises clients who already own shares in Lyft and Uber as well as those considering buying stock in the companies.

Investors will be assessing the companies based on the number of new riders and total rides, Williams said.

They will want to know, “Are these companies expanding?” he said.

UBER TOUTS DIVERSIFICATION

Uber reported sharply slower global bookings growth in the third quarter of 2018; that figure slid to 6 percent over the previous quarter in a business that had routinely been expanding by double-digit percentages.

People familiar with management’s thinking say Uber executives are concerned that if investors judge the company by the same yardstick as Lyft — focusing on the number of rides it sells as opposed to its other initiatives — its valuation could suffer in an IPO.

Uber plans to portray itself to IPO investors as a global logistics and mobility platform, and will spend less time on metrics specific to its core ride-hailing business, the people said.

Uber declined to comment.

Over the last year, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has sought to direct investor attention to food-delivery business Uber Eats, whose revenue grew 150 percent in the third quarter over the previous year.

Uber and Lyft continue to diverge, offering different financial opportunities to IPO buyers, according to Anna-Marie Wascher, CEO and founding partner at Flat World Partners, an investment management firm that made an early Lyft investment.

“With Uber, you will invest in Uber Eats and global expansion,” Wascher said. “Lyft will get investors betting on the U.S. ride-hailing market.”

YouTube Hails Censorship of Conspiracy Videos ‘Historic Victory’ for Big Tech

YouTube have hailed the censorship of conspiracy content on their platform as an historic victory for Big Tech

YouTube says the censorship of conspiracy-related content on the platform is a move in the right direction for Big Tech. 

On Saturday, a former engineer for Google hailed the company’s decision to no longer recommend videos that “come close to” violating its community guidelines as a “historic victory.”

Msn.com reports: The original blog post from YouTube, published on Jan. 25, said that videos the site recommends, usually after a user has viewed one video, would no longer lead just to similar videos and instead would “pull in recommendations from a wider set of topics.”

For example, if one person watches one video showing the recipe for snickerdoodles, they may be bombarded with suggestions for other cookie recipe videos. Up until the change, the same scenario would apply to conspiracy videos.

YouTube said in the post that the action is meant to “reduce the spread of content that comes close to — but doesn’t quite cross the line of — violating” its community policies. The examples the company cited include “promoting a phony miracle cure for a serious illness, claiming the earth is flat, or making blatantly false claims about historic events like 9/11.”

The change will not affect the videos’ availability. And if users are subscribed to a channel that, for instance, produces conspiracy content, or if they search for it, they will still see related recommendations, the company wrote.

Guillaume Chaslot, a former Google engineer, said that he helped to build the artificial intelligence used to curate recommended videos. In a thread of tweets posted on Saturday, he praised the change.

“It’s only the beginning of a more humane technology. Technology that empowers all of us, instead of deceiving the most vulnerable,” Chaslot wrote.

Chaslot described how, prior to the change, a user watching conspiracy theory videos was led down a rabbit hole of similar content, which was the intention of the AI he said he helped build.

According to Chaslot, the goal of YouTube’s AI was to keep users on the site as long as possible in order to promote more advertisements. When a user was enticed by multiple conspiracy videos, the AI not only became biased by the content the hyper-engaged users were watching, it also kept track of the content that those users were engaging with in an attempt to reproduce that pattern with other users, Chaslot explained.

He pointed to a different artificial intelligence that was also shaped by the bias of its users: Microsoft’s chatbot “Tay.”

Tay was a Twitter chatbot produced by Microsoft, which was meant to interact with users like a human and learn from others.

Within 24 hours of its release, Tay went from innocent chatbot to full-blown misogynist and racist, according to The Verge. The AI operating Tay learned from and became biased by the engagement it received from Twitter users who were spamming the bot with those ideologies, according to CNBC.

Chaslot said that YouTube’s fix to its recommendations AI will have to include getting people to videos with truthful information and overhauling the current system it uses to recommend videos.

“The AI change will have a huge impact because affected channels have billions of views, overwhelmingly coming from recommendations,” Chaslot said, adding that the platform’s decision to make this change affect thousands of new users.

YouTube did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Chaslot’s thread.
