Supreme Court to hear electronic eavesdropping case –Obama administration lawyers appealed to the highest US court on behalf of James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence [Thanks, Obusha!] 21 May 2012 The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a US government challenge to a lawsuit against its electronic surveillance program, which allows authorities to eavesdrop on Americans’ overseas phone calls and emails. The court agreed to hear the case Clapper vs. Amnesty International, the Barack Obama administration’s petition to the US top court in which it seeks to throw out a suit challenging US government monitoring of Americans’ international communications.

Supreme Court Agrees to Hear Affirmative Action Case 21 Feb 2012 The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear a major case on affirmative action in higher education, adding another potential blockbuster to a docket already studded with them. The court’s decision in the new case holds the potential to undo an accommodation reached in the Supreme Court’s 5-to-4 decision in 2003 in Grutter v. Bollinger: that public colleges and universities could not use a point system to boost minority enrollment but could take race into account in vaguer way to ensure academic diversity. The new case, Fisher v. Texas, No. 11-345, was brought by Abigail Fisher, a white student who said she was denied admission to the University of Texas because of her race.

Seven judges to hear Julian Assange extradition appeal 16 Dec 2011 A panel of seven supreme court justices will hear Julian Assange’s appeal against extradition to Sweden to face accusations of rape and sexual assault. The large number of judges employed reflects “the great public importance of the issue”, according to a statement from the UK’s highest court. The supreme court said there would be a two-day hearing of the appeal by the Australian-born founder of WikiLeaks beginning on 1 February.
