Scientists Discover That Earth’s Atmosphere Extends Far Beyond The Moon

Scientists have discovered that the Earth’s atmosphere stretches much farther than previously thought and extends far beyond the Moon.

Using  data from over 20 years ago, a team of researchers measured just how far the outermost part of the atmosphere goes

The study was published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics

RT reports: We now know that the atmosphere surrounding our planet stretches 630,000km (391,464 miles) away and is 50 times the diameter of Earth, thanks to the discovery and analysis of decades-old data by scientists at Russia’s Space Research Institute.

It means that the Moon is part of our atmosphere and not outside of it. In fact, it’s actually located right in the middle of our atmosphere, at an average distance of 384,400 kilometres (238,855 miles) from Earth.

“The Moon flies through Earth’s atmosphere,”explained study author physicist Igor Baliukin of Russia’s Space Research Institute.

The Earth’s geocorona @ ESA

The jaw-dropping data was collected by the NASA/European Space Agency Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) between 1996 and 1998 and had been gathering dust in an archive since then.

SOHO unwittingly gathered the groundbreaking information when it was mapping the geocorona, the layer of hydrogen atoms located where the atmosphere merges with outer space. The thin layer glows in far-ultraviolet light which can only be seen from space and is difficult to measure.

Because of this, it was, until now, thought to be about 200,000 kilometres (124,000 miles) from Earth, as that is the point at which solar radiation pressure would override Earth’s gravity.

SOHO’s SWAN instrument has the ability to measure far-ultraviolet emissions from hydrogen atoms, allowing it to make its amazing observation of the geocorona.

“Data archived many years ago can often be exploited for new science,” SOHO project scientist Bernhard Fleck of the European Space Agency said. “This discovery highlights the value of data collected over 20 years ago and the exceptional performance of SOHO.”

The Market’s Thin Red Line Exposed

Authored by Sven Henrich via NorthmanTrader.com,

As the one way market squeeze continues relentlessly for its 9th week in a row there’s a thin red line everybody is watching, or at least should be watching. Well, maybe nobody is watching it, but I am.

Trend lines are very important to these markets and I’ve talked about them at length before. On a log basis markets broke their 2009 bull market trend in December. What this rally has done now is approach this broken trend line. As I’ve mentioned on numerous occasions trend lines can be critical in identifying major resistance and support as they can be incredibly relevant to markets.

But trend lines can also be overshot to the upside or downside on a temporary basis, only to then revert below or above them. We’ve seen this before on numerous occasions as well.

But when a market breaks its long standing trend it’s usually very meaningful.

This happened in December, and what was support was broken. Theoretically that now means that what was support is now resistance and here we are:

It’s pretty impressive actually considering how fast and uncorrected this market has moved since the December lows.

Now to be fair, I can also adjust this trend line slightly to the first low in 2016 and one can see that $SPX has a bit more room to move higher on this version:

Markets will ultimately reveal which version they will find relevant.

For bulls the danger here remains that this rally was an extremely aggressive counter rally in context of a broken bull market trend.

For a reversal in the near future could quickly change the perspective of this rally:

Why? Because a reversal in the near term could confirm that the bull market trend is indeed broken, in which case the technical picture suggests that the December correction was just the first step.

Remember, technically speaking, a break of the bull market trend in earnest suggests a much larger long term fib retrace risk:

That’s the recession scenario everyone seems to be keen on denying being a possibility.

As of this juncture this is all speculative, but $SPX is approaching this potentially key thin red line and everyone should be watching it. If bulls can jump above it and defend it, then that’s bullish. Failing to do so, risks a confirmation of a broken bull market trend.

Prepping: For Super Bowl?

Sure!

Nachos and dips, beer, jerky, in fact, you could go through your entire prepping kit and try out all those things this weekend.

After all, since SB is the quintessential do-nothing weekend, what better time to pop open some Mountain House Beef Stroganoff 10 Can Freeze Dried Food – 6 CANS per Case.   OK, don’t need a whole case?  Then save it for camping of when you get the flu.  I like it as comfort food.

More seriously?  (Aw shucks, to we have to?)

Around here, we won’t be watching the game for any number of reasons.  First, it’s a game.  Second, it’s too long. Although I have a theory that if you drink enough beer during the game, you’ll be getting up often-enough to pee that you won’t get deep vein thrombosis…  Or, if you’re worried about DVT (are you a lardly couch-Russet?) and don’t have a bleeding disorder and, and…then a baby aspirin an hour before kick-off and kick-back.

Main thing to have on hand for Monday?  Drink a lot of water (Pedialyte is better, or Gatorade) before bed.  You’ll wake up a lot better off than without ’emsince much of a hangover is lack of hydration.  And then a B-complex wouldn’t hurt the night before, either…

Congeners!  Watch the freakin congeners.  For as the Great Wikipedia advises:

…congeners are substances, other than the desired type of alcohol, ethanol, produced during fermentation. These substances include small amounts of chemicals such as methanol and other alcohols (known as fusel alcohols), acetone, acetaldehyde, esters, tannins, and aldehydes (e.g. furfural). Congeners are responsible for most of the taste and aroma of distilled alcoholic beverages, and contribute to the taste of non-distilled drinks.

Is it the booze that kills, or the crap in in?  But I digress….

Here at “the ranch” the day begins with a trip to the propane dispensary…open until noon.  They’re open on Saturday in the summer on account of BBQing and in the winter on account of heating.  This means I ran out of propane while out fence line burning Friday…  Elaine will be on a T-bone or Porterhouse mission later…and well as foraging for mushrooms in the veggie department.

After that, a short article for next weekend will be based on my simple upgrades planned for our old table saw.  I’m tuning it up and changing it around somewhat since cabinet-making it as hand.

Then I’ll get out the welders and pay with the stick rig and the plasma cutter. I do enough Tig/wire and gas already.  The next baby stick welder, though, is still in the “learning to play it stage.”

Which explains why I went by the local machine shop here in Palestine  Friday.  To pick up some thin sheet metal to begin welding with the new stick machine (review to come).

While there, I had a very pleasant conversation with the fellow there about whether the 3/32″ low amp 6013 rod I’m planning on using on the thin metal will work well.

He offered some fine advice, having pushed puddles for 25+ years.    Welding is easier, he explained, if you run the welds “hot and fast.”  His judgement was that 1/8th” rod would burn cooler because thinner rod tends to burns hotter. I have some of both so I’ll test both.

Being around experts in any field, I’ve found it pays to keep the mouth closed and the ears open…experts have made more mistakes than I have and it’s cheaper to talk to people than attend welding school.

As long as the machines are out (if the rain doesn’t move in) a number of add-ons for the tractor are in order.  One is a long overhead bracket off the roll-over bar to the front to carry a pole saw.  I’d also like to put one of the chainsaws on the brush hog, but that seems silly – yet it’s not if going back up to the hour from the lower 10 is a 15-minute break in the work…

The greenhouse should be dry enough to finish laying out the seeds on the hot mat to get started…regardless of weather.

By them we ought to be pooped.

And for reading after?

Read: Gaye’s Book!!!

From my buddy Gaye of Strategic Living Blog:  “Get the Updated Prepper’s Guide to Food Storage for Free: Feb 1-5. “Prepper’s Guide to Food Storage: A Practical Guide to Storing Food For the Long Term.”

Wait…you did see the word free, right?  And if you go to Amazon they have readers for people who don’t have Kindles though how a person can live without both a reader and a notepad and a laptop and a…well, you get the idea.

While You Are Out Shopping?

If you are in one of the cold-struck parts of the country, make sure to pick up a fresh can or two of medium and hot-set Oatey PVC glue at either Lowe’s or Home Despots.  A few handfuls of 1/2 and 3/4 PVC end caps (and CPVC caps if used to route hot water in your home) can save a ton of problems when pipes thaw if they have broken.

You do know where your water shut-off is?

We assume you have PVC cutters like unbelievably verbose XOOL Pipe and Tube Cutter, Ratcheting Hose Cutter One-hand Fast Pipe Cutting Tool with Ratchet Drive for Cutting Less Than 1-1/4″ O.D. PEX, PVC, and PPR Pipe, Ideal for Plumbers, Home Handy Man.  $10-buck at the ‘Zon.

What else to cover?  Ice? Spare Batteries for the remote?

TOILET PAPER.  Toilet plunger?  What if the nachos…well…you know… have extra.

Coffee?

And last, but not least, if you live in a one-day Amazon delivery area:

If you feel like that’s a good idea, and maybe you need to keep it in the glove box, maybe it’s time for an honest sit-down discussion with your HR folks about getting help.  After the game.
Enjoy the game.  Walk, don’t fly, and moron Monday.

Roger Stone: ‘This Is a Full-Fledged War on Alternative Media’

Roger Stone warns there is a war on alternative media

Trump ally Roger Stone has warned the American people that there is currently a full-fledged war taking place against the alternative media.

Speaking on Tucker Carlson Tonight on Friday, Stone mentioned how the war on alternative media has left him almost bankrupt:

Former Trump adviser Roger Stone said in a Fox News interview Friday that the indictment brought against him as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation is “thin” and is really “about silencing” him. But, Stone said, he was prepared for the fight of his life.

“There’s a war on alternative media,” he said. “There’s a war where they’re trying to criminalize political expression. There’s a war where they’re trying to criminalize free speech.”

Stone’s remarks on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” came after he was taken into custody earlier Friday and indicted on charges of obstruction, making false statements and witness tampering.

“I’m in for the fight of my life but I will not quit. I will not fold. I will not bend. I will not bear false witness against the president,” Stone said. “I intend to fight because this indictment is fabricated. This indictment is thin as can be.”

[…]The indictment unsealed Friday does not charge Stone with conspiring with WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy website that published emails of Democrats during the 2016 campaign, or with the Russian officers Mueller says hacked them. Instead, it accuses him of lying about his interactions related to WikiLeaks’ release during probes by Congress and Mueller’s team.

Information Liberation reports: One of the craziest elements of this show was that Tucker didn’t cut to a commercial until around 35 minutes into the program due to the ongoing advertiser boycott (which is due to monologues like the one he gave last night).

Regardless, Mueller and his deep state cronies are doing to Stone exactly what they did to everyone else who helped Trump win his campaign — they’re using the full power of the state to manufacture “crimes” out of thin air. This is literally the most despicable tactic a government prosecutor has at their disposal and it’s almost the only tactic Mueller has used to persecute everyone connected to Trump.

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz shared an excellent video on Friday which went viral that shows a giant list of people who committed the same “crime” Stone is accused of but were never prosecuted:

President Trump made a similar point this morning:

Which is a greater “attack on our democracy”?:

– Russians sharing crappy memes and spending a meager amount of money on a few Facebook and Google ads

– A 2-plus year deep state witch hunt manufacturing charges against everyone connected to Trump and bankrupting them with drawn-out legal proceedings in order to force plea deals or throw them in prison

It’s a really tough call!

Yen soars as investors seek safety on China growth fears

January 3, 2019

By Saikat Chatterjee and Tommy Wilkes

LONDON (Reuters) – The yen surged on Thursday as investors scrambled into the perceived safety of the Japanese currency after a shock revenue warning from Apple exacerbated concerns about a Chinese and broader global economic slowdown.

The yen at one point was 4.4 percent stronger versus the dollar after a flurry of automated orders triggered a ‘flash crash’ in thin Asian markets. It later stabilized but the yen remains on course for its biggest one-day rise in 20 months.

Such big moves in foreign exchange markets reflect deep and growing angst about the global economy – the yen has traditionally been the go-to currency in times of stress because traders believe the legions of Japanese investors holding money overseas will rush back into Japan when markets are in flux.

The yen, up 5.3 percent in five weeks, is the best performing major currency since early December, when worries about the direction of the global economy intensified.

Weakness in the dollar also reflects concerns about the U.S. economy and a drastic shift in investor expectations for interest rate rises, with many now calling the end of the Federal Reserve’s rate-hiking cycle.

“It’s a continuation of some of the market anxieties related to China, the U.S. and more specifically there is a reevaluation of the dollar as a safe-haven,” said Jane Foley, currencies analyst at Rabobank.

“The underlying trend has been there for all of December. The move was exacerbated by the thin liquidity, the flash crash, but the trend, the bias, is not surprising,” she said, describing the yen as the “safer safe haven”.

The break of some key technical levels in early Asian trading on Thursday triggered massive stop-loss sales, forcing investors to unwind some of their large short yen trades against the dollar and quickly cascading into other currencies.

The dollar collapsed to as low as 104.10 yen <JPY=EBS> in early Asian trading when liquidity is thin, a drop of 4.4 percent from the opening level of 108.87 and the lowest reading since March 2018.

The yen last traded at 107.57 yen, down 1.2 percent on the day. At session lows, it has fallen more than 6.5 percent in the last five trading sessions.

ILLIQUID MARKETS

The yen reserved some of its biggest gains against the traditional high-yielding currencies favored by domestic retail investors such as the Australian dollar <AUDJPY=R> and the Turkish lira <TRYJPY=R>.

The selling quickly gathered momentum in illiquid markets, with Japan still on holiday after the New Year.

“The sharp drop in risk sentiment fueled by weaker PMI data in China and Europe and Apple’s warning has contributed to the sharp overnight move in the yen,” said Valentin Marinov, head of G10 FX research at Credit Agricole.

The yen’s surge against the dollar also pushed it higher against other major rivals such as the pound and the euro.

Market watchers say the yen’s surge may have further room to run as Japanese investors that have recently piled into overseas assets unhedged are forced to cover their positions.

Elsewhere, the dollar was down 0.3 percent against a basket of its rivals <.DXY> at 96.559 while the euro <EUR=EBS> rose 0.2 percent to $1.1368.

The Australian dollar <AUD=D3>, a barometer of global sentiment that tends to track Chinese economic fortunes fell 0.3 percent to $0.6963 after earlier tumbling to $0.6715, a near-decade low.

ANTHONY TOLDA GETS RESTORED TO THE BALLOT FOR US CONGRESS (3rd District of NY)

For Immediate Release, May 8, 2012

ANTHONY TOLDA, AN IMPRESSIVE GOP CANDIDATE, SURPRISES EVERYONE AND GETS RESTORED TO THE BALLOT FOR US CONGRESS (3rd District of NY)!

Mineola, NY, May 8, 2012 — NYS Supreme Court ORDERS that Anthony Tolda be restored to the all ballots for the public office of Congressman for NY District 3 (Suffolk, Nassau and Queens).

Today, Nassau County Supreme Court in Mineola, Hon. Anthony F. Marano, J.S.C., did ORDER from the bench, that Anthony Tolda be restored to ALL BALLOTS (including ALL machine ballots and ALL paper ballots) as a Republican Party Candidate for US Congress for the 3rd Congressional District of New York.

“I am very thankful that my prayers were answered and justice was done” said Mr. Tolda, who ran for the same office in 2010 as a Constitution Party Candidate. “I am in this race because our economy and liberty needs to be defended”, Mr. Tolda said further, “in the past my primary opponent, Mr. Labate, has gone so far as to favor CISPA, PIPA and SOPA type legislation which would have harmed our ability to use the internet freely; on other issues, his platform is thin.”

“The last thing the people need is another carpet bagger selling influence from the floor of a legislature” remarked xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, Mr. Tolda’s aggressive campaign strategist xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. He went on to say “Labate is a phony; when he talks about his promises or commitments to the voters (of the district) he shows himself as a laughable long-distance candidate”.

“It seems that Mr. Labate has been running a half-hearted campaign, and not giving his best, especially not to the Republican voters of the district. He is a RINO (Republican-In-Name-Only) who lives OUTSIDE the district and whose positions will make government even bigger. His special interest backers include Steve Forbes who seem to be lobbying government or thinking they can buy a seat for Mr. Labate to serve their own personal agendas. I am proud that Mr. Tolda wants to nip corruption in the bud” says xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

“Today, in court, I went up against party lawyers. I was unrepresented (pro se) and they were stopped. I want to go up against bullies; justice is very important to me” remarked Mr. Tolda (who has been a member of Curtis Sliwa’s Guardian Angels).

Polar bear populations remain on thin ice, U of A researchers say –Global warming forcing bears to spend more time on land where there is virtually no food 09 Apr 2012 Two of Canada’s top polar bear scientists warn that recent attempts to justify an increase in the harvest [by terrorists] of the iconic animal in western Hudson Bay could lead to trade sanctions against Canada. University of Alberta scientists Ian Stirling and Andrew Derocher say the population is neither as “abundant” nor as “healthy” as a Nunavut Inuit organization claimed last week when it used the preliminary results of a recent survey to justify an increase in the annual harvest. Lost in the debate, says Stirling, is the fact that the polar bears of western Hudson Bay might be producing only 20-50 per cent as many cubs as they did 30 years ago when the bears had a month or more time to hunt seals on the sea ice…
