One strain of the H7N9 bird flu virus appears to spread easily through the air between ferrets, which are a good model for how the virus may spread in humans, a new study from China says. Researchers tested transmission of five strains of H7N9, all taken from people who got sick with the virus. …One strain was able to spread very well it infected 100 percent of the ferrets who were exposed to it through the air.

China bird flu analysis finds more virus threats lurking
A deadly new bird flu virus in China evolved from migratory birds via waterfowl to poultry and into people, and there are other bird flu viruses circulating that could follow the same path, scientists have found. The study – an analysis of the evolutionary history of the H7N9 bird flu that has so far killed 44 people – identified several other H7 flu viruses circulating in birds that the researchers said “may pose threats beyond the current outbreak”. While none of the additional H7 strains they detected has yet been found in humans, some are able to infect other mammals such as ferrets, the researchers said, suggesting a jump to humans may be possible.

Scientists [authors of a report published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences] detail how a swine flu virus currently circulating in Korea – without apparently making the pigs sick – quickly changed into a deadly flu virus when it was put into ferrets. Once in ferrets, the virus acquired two new mutations that somehow conferred unusual virulence. Infected ferrets died within 10 days and transmitted the virus easily to other animals in respiratory droplets. The mutations occurred in all three ferrets infected with the Korean pig virus. Mystery Illness Kills Three in Maryland Family
We have to wonder if it may be a mutant strain of flu virus.’ 06 Mar 2012 Three members of a Maryland family died after contracting severe respiratory illnesses and a third family member is hospitalized in critical condition, the Calvert County Health Department announced Tuesday. Officials are trying to identify the illness that killed an 81-year-old woman and two of her children, both in their 50s, who cared for her in her home in Lusby. Another of the woman’s children is seriously ill at Washington Medical Center. “The first thing that comes to mind is influenza,” said Dr. William Schaffner, chair of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. “But when they’re a cluster like this, we have to wonder if it may be a mutant strain of flu virus. There’s been some concern about a swine flu variant.”

Finland: Hundreds of reports of harm from swine flu shots
The National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) has received 69 reports of narcolepsy or catalepsy attributed to last winter’s vaccine campaign against the H1N1, or swine flu virus. In all, THL has received around 900 reports of complications arising from the flu shots, nearly 200 of which have been categorised as serious.
